Transitioning May Not Be so Hard

By Jason Reyes

With over 2 decades of experience in Assisted Living Communities, I’ve come to grips that as we get older, change of any sort is rarely perceived as a good thing. So why should it be any different when we have to make such a big change like moving ourselves or family members into Assisted Living? After all, just because something is necessary doesn’t mean we have to like it.

A popular misconception to Senior Care Communities is that they are only required when our health deteriorates and forces us to move. While that is one reason, it’s far from being the only, data shows that seniors stay healthier longer by moving into Assisted Living before it becomes a requirement. Most seniors who live alone can be depressed and worst of all, they may not even think that they are. Common symptoms consist of irritability, loss of appetite, irregular sleeping patterns and feeling helpless. The good news is, once we get past the idea of “change”, an overwhelming feeling of happiness takes over.

There is an adjustment period for residents moving into Assisted Living but for the most part it is within a 3-week period that it takes to adjust. When they move into Assisted Living, they get to meet new people of their own age and soon they become close friends. That resident now has friends, a companion and a social life to be exact. They enjoy going to meals now, because they have a group of friends to socialize with. They enjoy activities together, entertainment together, taking walks together and going on outings together. As time goes by it soon becomes their home with many amenities and activities to choose from. Socially and physically life for seniors at assisted living communities can be very rewarding and fulfilling. The rewards of Assisted Living is knowing your loved one is safe and that they are in a community where there is twenty four hour seven days a week awake staffing to assist with bathing, dressing, toileting, medications management and all other activities of daily living. The caregivers and med. techs. get to know their residents on a personal level and they to become part of the residents family. There is a warm-hearted team of individuals in our community to help with all aspects of a resident’s life. Every community I own has a handpicked team with many years of experience in the industry. These individuals have compassion for our residents and our passionate about the service they bring to the community and to the residents.

For today’s seniors assisted living has developed programs for the active seniors. These programs emphasize the importance of engaging residents in physical activities to foster the independence of the resident. There are many things that seniors can enjoy in Assisted Living. Entertainment for the residents is important, so that they can sing and dance to their era of music. Residents truly enjoy this activity. Outings is another important aspect in a senior’s life. Getting the resident out of the community for a day can be very fulfilling to the resident. Trips to a restaurant for breakfast or for lunch, trips to go shopping, trips to a local casino and a day trip to nearest big city are all enjoyable activities for today’s senior. Senior’s in todays Assisted Living lead happy and Healthy lifestyles. This is very important to the families of the residents, knowing that their loved one is cared for twenty four hours a day seven days a week and knowing that their loved one is now engaging in a wonderful social and physical lifestyle. Assisted Living is a great resolve when our seniors can no longer live alone and families can be at peace knowing their loved one is in a safe environment.
